REL Acoustics Subwoofers
RELs are not traditional subwoofers, but true sub-bass systems. A REL is designed to augment the performance of “full range” speaker systems, to provide linear response down to below 12 Hz (Studio III, -6 dB down at 9 Hz). Therefore, for the moment, set aside everything you’ve been taught about subwoofers and how they are integrated into a stereo or theater system. RELs set-up and position differently than other subwoofers. A REL will take advantage of physics and room acoustics to provide deep pressurization as no other sub-woofer can. It’s important that you bring to the set-up process a willingness to do things a little differently in order to obtain these superior results. The end result of your labors will be an utterly seamless integration of true deep bass to a sound system, regardless of the main speaker’s low bass capability.
REL R-Series are not traditional subwoofers, but rather true sub-bass systems. The R-Series is designed to augment the performance of “full range” speaker systems and to provide linear response down to below 20Hz. Properly set-up and positioned, they will take advantage of physics and room acoustics to provide deep pressurization as no other subwoofer can. Unique to the REL are its connectivity options. For two-channel audio systems a high-level connection, using the enclosed cable with the Neutrik Speaker connector, is always the first choice. By connecting to the amplifier’s speaker outputs the sonic signature of the entire amplification chain is folded into the signal for the sub, thereby keeping timing and timbre cues consistent. Additionally, a low-level connection using RCA inputs is always an option, should high-level connection not be possible. In a surround system where both high-level and low-level connection is used, the REL R-Series provides individual inputs and gain control for both the Neutrik high level and .1/LFE input allowing accurate signal blend and balance.
With B-Series, an entirely new generation of high-end music and film sound devotees are poised to revel in the fruits of REL’s labors. These newest offerings are superbly crafted to redefine sub-bass performance across both the most sophisticated music or film sound systems with equal facility. The combination of an ultra-powerful new range of bass-engines, mounted forward firing, and with a patented twin-chamber exhaust, venting out the bottom produce truly prodigious low frequency output with startling speed. Last but not least, that most British of all virtues – quality is present everywhere one looks. Quality isn’t everything; it’s the only thing. All B-Series feature 24 crossover frequencies from 22-96Hz, using precision trimmed circuits. REL’s unique design permits operation of both high-level support of main speakers and .1 channel from one B2–something no other manufacturer offers. Massive power supplies and outstanding build quality are the cornerstones of REL’s reputation.
 

Many so-called ‘full-range’ loudspeakers cannot reproduce the low bass frequencies found on most music and movie discs, which are necessary for the accurate reproduction of the original recording and help to impart a natural ambience that is immediately recognisable by listeners as being closer to ‘the real thing’. Of course, movie DVDs incorporate a dedicated bass channel for the deeper bass special effects, but a properly designed sub-bass system will not only reproduce these with accuracy, it will also augment the output of conventional stereo and surround loudspeakers with very low frequency bass that is felt rather than heard.


The result is greater fidelity. The system with a wider bandwidth will always sound more realistic and ultimately more entertaining and stimulating. In many cases, the best way, the only way, to add these critical bass frequencies is to introduce a correctly designed sub-bass system, one which not only has the technical ability to reveal the deepest sounds, but will also integrate seamlessly with the loudspeakers so that your system speaks with one deeper, more natural voice.
